Hospital Bag for Baby

After three births and hospital stays, I have a pretty good idea of what we will all need to be comfortable for our stay.

So I started with an antimicrobial Bogg Bag for each of us. Then I stuffed them plum full with items that would help us feel at home. I know how uncomfortable birth is, and how fun a hospital stay can be. I definitely over pack, the nurses love it (sarcasm), but the worst thing is needing something and relying on someone to find it in your home or make the correct purchase. Even worse, is sending Dad away when all he wants to do is enjoy baby as well.

My bag always ends up being the heaviest. I try to think of all the things a person might want or need for birth recovery. Cosmetics, bathroom supplies, post partum care, clothing, comfort..

I pack a jewelry case in case I’m wearing any jewelry and for my wedding band when we go in as I do not wear any jewelry around new baby. It harbors bacteria and can scratch baby’s delicate new skin. I like to have a go-to spot to keep it safe and keep track of it.

I am also required to bring my own cooler for my Placenta to be encapsulated. I choose Yeti because I know it will keep it Ice Cold until it gets to it’s destination.

I bring a second Yeti cooler for any breast milk I’ve caught.

(I do not pump in the first month, I do not want to mess with the nature of things and confuse my body)

Letter board for birth announcement.

I start with what I like to call the “ease of access bag”. This is a packing cube that I could send my husband for in the event we are rushed. It has the essentials:

  • UV toothbrush
  • Hello toothpaste
  • Mouthwash
  • Native Deodorant
  • Philosophy Cream to Water Natural Lotion
  • Glasses
  • Daily Contacts
  • Bobby pins
  • Gimme hair ties
  • 10 ft long phone charger
  • Eminence Monai Face Cleanser
  • Origins zero oil moisturizer
  • Hemp chap-stick
  • Elvie Curve for if that milk supply comes in
  • Breast Milk Storage bags

It can get very dry in the hospital so make sure to have lotions and chap sticks in both of your bags.

Then I have my “shower cube”, I make sure my products are natural and safe for baby, especially anything that I will be using on body parts coming into contact with my new bundle:

  • Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Shampoo
  • Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Conditioner
  • Eminence body wash
  • Philosphy Natural shower oil
  • Living Proof in-shower styler
  • Shower flip-flops
  • Hair towel (I basically live in this; bare faced)

And of course, if I’m feeling up to it (I’m usually not), I may want my go-to make-up and hair supplies:

  • My favorite brushes
  • Eyelash comb
  • Dime lash serum
  • Eminence eye cream
  • Eminence instant line filler
  • Tula face filter
  • Tarte Park Ave Princess palette
  • Tarte Shape Tape cream concealer for those tired mama eyes
  • Tarte glow wands
  • Tarte Peachy Cream blush
  • Origins Peeper Pleaser eye shadow
  • Fenti brow wand
  • Tarte Shape Tape setting powder
  • Tarte stay spray
  • *I leave my lips bare for all those kisses*
  • Norwex Make-up remover pads
  • Proven face system
  • Lashify materials

This cube also includes my hair essentials:

  • Clip
  • Gimme hair bands
  • Gimme head bands
  • WET hair brush
  • Hair scarf
  • Living Proof perfecting spray
  • Living Proof dry volume blast
  • Sock for sock bun

Next is clothing items, I make sure everything is lactation and post partum friendly. I also make sure to give myself many options because often I will change my mind and not enjoy any given item.

  • I start with my cherished silk pajamas
    • Green
    • Leopard
  • And of course, my lived inVictoria’s Secret leopard robe 2
  • I throw in a button down organic cotton sleep shirt
  • Then an “Everyday Dress” from Lou Lou and Co is a must!
    • Black
    • Olive
  • Two (2) take home outfits for myself
  • Compression leggings
    • Belly Bandit Mother Tucker
    • Lulumon Get In Line super high rise
  • Soma Embliss Nursing bras (4) in case we are early and have an extended stay, clean bras are a MUST for preventing mastitis
  • Slip on shoes I can throw on for roaming around the room and when they take baby to nursery for testing, both my husband and I always attend even if it is the middle of the night.
    • We do NOT leave baby’s side. This is our rule of thumb, I am personally eyes on baby every second after birth (except to shower, this is Micah’s special daddy-baby time). And quite generally unless he is bringing me food, he does not take eyes off of baby either. Sleep greatly lacks during our hospital stay. The nurses do not change or handle our babies. We practice zero intervention birth and hospital stay. I know mamas are tired, and to each our own, we feel this prepares us for going home and we are both very over protective after longing so long for our children.
  • Comfy, clean (usually brand new, broken in only at home) Tennis Shoes for going home.
  • Laundry bag
    • so we are not trying to sort clean from dirty when arriving home.

Lastly, but definitely most importantly in my bag is my post-partum care cube:

  • Any and all FRIDA MOM products are a must
  • Tucks (I have never used these but thought throwing them in couldn’t hurt)
  • Witch hazel
  • Nature’s Sunshine Silver Rescue Shield (this prevents infection where ever it may be needed. It is the go-to band-aid in our home)
  • Vitamin K drops for baby
  • And VERY VERY importantly Silverette nursing cups, used for protecting my nipples, shielding from infection, catching milk, and easing that first couple weeks of dreaded nipple pain. These are MIRACLE WORKERS! And 110% REQUIRED.

Misc. Items in my bag:

  • Pink Stork lactation sweets to suck on in labor
  • New face mask for any stops on way home
    • We will take baby to meet my Dad as he is currently located in the same city that I deliver in.
  • Baby’s Hazelwood and Amber necklace
  • Mini notepad to write down any questions or comments I have.
    • This is important, especially for first time mothers, but also for any memories you may want to make sure you keep.
  • Hello Bello hand sanitizer (travel size bottle in every bag)
  • Lots of socks! Comfy socks!

And then sweet baby’s bag:

  • Bedding essentials:
    • Two (2) Silk pillowcase for our hair and faces, both of us.
      • We don’t take our own pillow as it’s bulky, if we had a prolonged stay, Micah could find a nice pillow somewhere for us but sleep is so lacking and the stay so short that I don’t see this as a required item.
    • A queen size Egyptian cotton fitted sheet for the bed we will share in the mothering suite.
      • What can I say? We like to be comfortable.
    • My favorite barefoot dreams blanket to cover up with.
  • Face shields (this is new to my hospital stay).
    • I will not mask our faces from our new baby. But I will respectfully wear a face shield when others are in our room.
  • Petunia Pickle Bottom Pacifier bag with two (2) pacifiers and organic cotton braided clips
    • Usually I don’t use these. BUT I learned with Bjorn, that some babies just like to suck! He lost interest just a little at 5 months and I immediately swiped them all and we never looked back.
  • A Petunia Pickle Bottom bottle bag hanging outside of diaper bag containing easily accessible Meg Originals burp cloths. Rolled for dispensing.
  • Wet bags for soiled cloth diapers
  • Petunia Pickle Bottom Diaper changing clutch with mat and Water Wipes
  • Additional Petunia Pickle Bottom bags/cubes for any last minute items.
  • Portable UV sanitizer for pacis or anything else I may feel the need to sanitize.
  • A cube with Meg Originals Burp cloths
  • A cube with a Saranoni Bamboni blanket for baby
  • Saranoni Bamboni lovey for baby
  • Two (2) Lou Lou and Co. Swaddles
  • Two (2) Lou Lou and Co. Hats
  • A cube with lots of clothing options for baby!
    • Kyte baby knotted gowns
    • Lou Lou and Co. knotted gowns
    • Posh Peanut knotted gowns
    • Posh Peanut sleep sacks
    • One (1) Posh Peanut zippered footy pajama
  • Baby Bogg Bag containing:
    • Newborn cloth diapers
    • Hello Bello organic newborn diapers (in the event something happens to me. I don’t want to leave Micah dealing with cloth diapers and figuring out how to father a newborn alone)
    • Water Wipes

Gender for this surprise baby is also a surprise! I went with Camo/Leopard theme because I love the prints TOGETHER and I feel that they are gender nuetral and their colors are also gender nuetral.

I suggest over packing versus under packing BUT the hospital will provide you with everything you and baby need in the event that you are unprepared. I like to have my own items and they’re pretty luxurious. I consider my hospital bag and all it’s itemd my “push gift” for myself.

I will share what Micah packs in another post about Making Dad’s stay comfortable and ways to think of Dad during this special time.

Thank you for taking the time to read, I hope this helps any Mama preparing for birth to check all of her boxes and feel deserving of comfort in these moments of extreme discomfort that is so often minimized by the Baby Bliss Delight!
